Iwasaki Museum & Gete (Gaiety or Goethe) Theater

The Gaiety Theater was built at 68 Yamashita-cho by Noordhoek Hegt a Dutch merchant. The theater held various entertainments, especially Shakespearean production from Dec 1870 to June 1885. The 2nd Gaiety Theater designed by Paul Sarda was built at Yamate in 1885 and collapsed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The present Gaiety Theater was built as a museum by the Iwasaki Educational Instituation in commemoration of their 50th anniversary.。
