The foreign residents leased land near Myokoji Temple to create the first western-style park in Yokohama in 1870 according to the Convention of Improvement of Settlement of Yokohama including the Negishi Racetrack and the Foreign cemetery in 1866. The first Ladies Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club was opened in 1878. Mr John Brooke of The Japan Herald brought the first Himalayan Cedar trees from India and planted it here. Flower Shows, Outdoor Concerts and Tennis Tournaments were held here for the foreign residents.
